A lot of times in theater we are using cliches.
Cliche is an expression - a shortcut to meaning.
In a theatrical play cliches are used regularly because they interact with the audience better.
For example, it's better and more interesting for a character to say :
"You work your fingers to the bone"
rather than say: "You work extremely hard"
