Now we are working on....

Grade 2:
Character and emotion games.
(Links to homeroom lessons : English language skills)

At this age, children are very open to new challenges and are quite enthusiastic to experiment new  approaches.
Sometimes, though, they get shy when they have to share this thrill with others.
In performing arts, it is very important to be able to express feelings.
This week and the next week we will be working on building a strong base that can support this future expression.
And, of course, what is easier for a kid to draw a feeling? Drawing means imagine it first. And if you can imagine it, if you can picture the pose then you can do it!
By playing with drawings and emotions the grade 2 students subconsciously are composing a theatrical background, becoming costume designers and directors of a character and emotion small play.
Here are some of the feelings:

I am a brave girl!
(See how the pose shows confidence)

I am embarrassed!!
( This boy has left the house and forgot to wear pants!)

I am mad!

I am happy!

I am curious

I am free!

I am bad!
(Observe the colors chosen for the dress, the eyes and the pose)

I am shy...
(Here, we have a whole set with props. We are in a living room, with mom and a guest.
The shy girl is barely visible which is a very wise directing approach)

I am worried...
The eyes are almost closed and we have a single tear.
This is very important - though subconsciously conceived.
If somebody had to express sadness we would have  much more crying.
The single tear shows emotional agony.

I am guilty.
The pose of the body is absolutely perfect and the eyes are showing pure quilt.
The line of the mouth is not exactly sad, showing that there are a lot of emotions going on.

I am confused!!

I am mixed up!
A great approach of multiple feelings at the same time.
This little girl's face, is switching constantly from positive to negative emotions.

You can support your child's effort through the weekend, if you could play a game;
Choose one word for you  and one for your child from the following list and draw a picture.
Then show it to each other and try to guess the feeling or the character's statement.

MAD, HAPPY, GUILTY, MIXED UP, CLEVER, BRAVE, FREE, RELAXED, SHY, BAD, UNPOPULAR, EMBARRASED, WORRIED, MERRY, INJURED, CURIOUS, HEARTBROKEN.
